The Victorian tourists visiting Bridlington needed entertainment and in 1896 the New Spa and Gardens were opened as part of a development by the Whitaker bros. The 5 acres included a theatre, concert hall, bandstand and refreshment rooms. In 1906 the original theatre was destroyed by fire. The current Spa Theatre and Opera House, designed by W S Walker, was opened in 1907 and used to show that new invention, the cinematograph.
In 1914 East Riding of Yorkshire Council took a lease on the Spa and in 1919 they purchased it. In 1925 the council replaced the last of the 1890's Spa with new Spa Royal Hall. Opened in 1926 and built at a cost of £50,000 it was a flagship art deco building. On the night of the 29th Jan 1932 it burnt down though fortunately the theatre was not badly damaged and able to reopen at Easter. In a remarkable feat of design and construction the current Royal Hall was designed by the borough architect Peter Newton and built in 52 days to re-open in July 1932.
The Spa Royal Hall (main room )

The Ocean Suite-Modern/Crossover Room
One of the great features of moving into the new Spa complex in 2008 and away from the 3Bs dancehall was the option of opening a room dedicated to the Modern/Crossover side of Soul music.
As with all things about the Spa, it’s a state of the art facility conveniently situated to the left-hand side of the stage just off the main dancehall through a set of double doors.
The self contained room boasts its own Bar along with “wall to wall” maple dance floor. The room actually holds 250-270
People so it’s the perfect size for this sort of event.
There are views straight out over the Prom and it is quite a sight at night and really adds an extra atmosphere to the room as a whole.
The DJ selection for 2009 is squarely aimed at keeping the dance floor busy and punters happy. Our token Irish/ Lancastrian, John Kane is once again back behind the decks with his loud shirts and superb sounds to entertain us on both evenings. With his finger firmly on the pulse of the modern scene both in the UK and throughout Europe John has a knack of pulling out and playing the unexpected !
Tats Taylor is again delving into his box of delights with a flavour of all things 70s/ Crossover and mostly SOUL. Watch out for his turn in the rare room as well this time.
Modernism’s main men Errol Green and Martin Dixon are well represented each with spots over the 3 days of the weekender, playing right across then spectrum of modern soul.
New Guys on the Block for this weekend’s event include Sweet Soul’s Andy Jackson fast picking up a reputation for playing only the best in quality tunes across the East Midlands and beyond.
Joining us from Spalding and Norwich respectively are Steve “SJay” Jackson and Kev Laws representing the east Anglia contingent. Also add in to the mix Lincoln’s John Corless and we seem to have all bases covered for the evening’s entertainment.
Willington’s Rob Kay is making his Bridlington Weekender debut as is Graham Slater from just down the M62 a piece to complete the evening line up.
We will be once again running the daytime sessions with KT Trouble and Gaz Walsh joined by Kim Maddocks
With a fantastic sound system and Music with SOUL guaranteed the Bridlington weekender is THE place to be this summer.
